Adjustable Chair for relieving back pain

Description


Esko Puusti has designed a chair to relieve back pain, whereby the person sitting in the chair uses his or her own weight to move the seat forwards and downwards while simultaneously lifting the backrest. The movement created by the chair opens up the angle of the user’s hips. The change in the position of the lumbar area lowers the pressure on the intervertebral discs in the spine and decreases static muscle work in the back, which lessens the load on the back.
Field of Use
The mechanism of the chair can be utilised in the furniture industry – to manufacture ergonomic seating, for example. The chair is also suitable for health-care needs, such as rehabilitation and physiotherapy, and can also be used in rehabilitation institutions.
Advantages

  • The mechanism of the chair has been developed to ease the load on the vertebrae in the lower back and to alleviate pain. The chair can help those suffering from back problems remain in the workforce longer or make the time they spend at work more agreeable.

  • The mechanism of the chair can be installed in various kinds of seating: in work chairs, arm chairs and beds, to name a few.

  • The structure of the chair is simple and lightweight.

Stage of Development
The chair is protected in Finland by a utility model. An international patenting process has been started. A prototype of the chair has been made in co-operation with the KymiDesign product development centre.
Business Proposal
A co-operation partner in either the furniture industry or health care is being sought for licensing or to otherwise make use of the invention.
